Matagalpa City

Matagalpa City

This is a view over Matagalpa city. The hill is Loma de San Tomas (Saint Thomas Hill) and the houses seen are some of the poorer within the city. The land on the hill was aportioned out by the government to the poor not too many years ago, funny enough, right next to an upper-class development!

La Conchita on La Celebracion de Purisima

This is la Conchita, the virgin Mary and a platter of candied apples. Look up La purisima to find out more. It is one of the biggest holidays in Nicaragua, religious of course.

Bryan milking the cow at Finca El Yunque with Roger (pronounced ”Row-hair”). We made flan later and also had cafe from the finca with some of the milk.

The view from the bell tower of Iglesia Merced, over the rooftops of Granada, the Catedral de Granada, and beyond, to the waterfront of Lake Cocibolca

The Beautiful Miss Clare!

The Beautiful Miss Clare!

We found an amazing (though expensive!) restaurant in Granada, right on the square where Captain Morgan, the infamous pirate, set up 18 cannons in the 1700s, during one of the three times that Granada was sacked.

Amigos en Granada

We met up with some new friends who we met at Sundog Ecovillage in Potomac, MT (near Missoula). Hugh and Erika are traveling from Guatemala to Costa Rica. Checkout Sundog’s website too http://www.sundogecovillage.org/sundogecovillage.org/home.html

Edie at Laguna de Apoyo

Edie at Laguna de Apoyo

Edie was dancing like Elvis (actually just stumbling around) at Laguna de Apoyo, a crater lake near Masaya, and some of the cleanest freshwater in Nicaragua.

La Catedral de San Pedro de Matagalpa

La Catedral de San Pedro de Matagalpa

This photo sums up a large part of life for many Nicaraguans; poverty and religion.

On the way to the Finca in Matagalpa deptartment

On the way to the Finca in Matagalpa deptartment

Try to tell me Latin Americans don’t value education! This was a wall in a shack in the middle of nowhere where we stopped for lunch on the way to the farm (finca). People here care so much about education but many can’t afford to buy a notebook or pencils, or can’t spare their children’s help with selling food or picking coffee. Not much different from the US, when parents who work two, three, or more jobs need their older children to work also, or watch their siblings.
